It seems
like yesterday when the Super Typhoon Yolanda devastated the Philippines. Now here comes another powerful typhoon with
gusts up to 250 km/h. Have we learned
from previous experiences? This is yet to
be seen and I hope that we are really prepared.
In a
country that s visited by more than 20 typhoons a year, you’d think that the
country is prepared. The truth is it is
not. Although preparations have been
made, response after the typhoons hit is a huge a questions. In the last Super typhoon, it around a week
before relief operations from the national government came in. Corpses are literally everywhere. Basic necessities are depleted faster than it
could be replenished. Survivors face
atrocious conditions that are reminiscent of hell – not that I’ve been
there. Suffice to say, management was
pathetic
Today
numerous scenarios have been discussed and action plans were ironed out. The typhoon is sure to hit the
Philippines. And worse, it will hit the
same areas that were decimated by Yolanda.
The question now is whether talks can be translated into efficient
action.
Regardless
of how “prepared” the Philippines is for the coming typhoon, there will be casualties. Whether it is on lives, properties,
industries or some other aspect of the Filipino lives; the country will find a
way to climb out of a dire situation.
The question is whether we do it quickly and efficiently or wait for
more casualties.
