They say
that sexual discrimination is a thing of the past. Such inequality does not exist in today’s
just society. Well, I think this is just
a dream many still have. The illusion of
equality remains a thorn in this modern day of ours. But the hurdles are being faced and the
challenges solved –or are they?
It may be
unthinkable to see women in the corporate world a century ago. But today, we have powerful women who run not
just small businesses but global enterprises.
They have managed to surpass numerous challenges which include climbing
the corporate ladder with men as their opposition. Moreover, women rise to power not just in the
business world. They unveil the shroud
of ignorance even in the political scene.
They have influenced (and continue to do so) policies both local and
international; laws that shape both the global trade and international
relations and many other avenues that was once thought to be a man’s
world. Even n the field of science,
women have taken their place in the spotlight of scientific breakthroughs and
discoveries. They have helped change our
views of the world, fight diseases, propelled us farther and further. Truly, women have become a dominant and
influential force in the changing world.
But sexual
discrimination is no longer limited to the male vs female scenario. We have other groups like the gay and lesbian
communities. Likewise, the growing
acceptance and coming out of bisexuals and transgender have captured our
curiosity. But they too suffer from sexual discrimination that plagues our
world.
We have
barely won the fight of women’s rights and it still rests of foundations
needing reinforcement. Now, we have to
open our minds wider as our notion of gender and sexual differences are being
tested again. Some easily make the
transition from awkward attitude to acceptance, some from apathy to tolerance
and others from hate to understanding.
It is a step towards harmonious relationship and it is a good step. But we need to go further and to educate
everyone that bigotry simply breathes more problems.
We think
that we live in a just society. But when
people are persecuted for what they believe in and their preferences; that puts
a cloud of doubt in our idea of just society.
