Efforts to Mitigate the Consequences of Climate Change

Written by Hazel Anne Louise L. Si

Several world issues have already been raised to our attentions for the past years, and it is no doubt that one of them would be the ever changing climate in our world. Climate change is already slowly transforming the life on our planet and still continues to threaten the existence of several resources in our world.

Unfortunately, a large percentage of people are either unaware of this crisis or simply refuse to do something about it. In fact, I can honestly say that I have been a part of this group of people, but am not proud of it. As I continued learning about this seemingly simple issue, I have completely changed my views. Climate change is no longer the mere changing of the weathers from time to time, but is actually a serious threat to the health of our world. I myself have already experienced some of its harsh consequences but still firmly believe that if we stood as a whole nation and whole-heartedly put our efforts to mitigate it, then it will happen.

High Risk of Wildlife Species

One of the most visible effects of climate change would be the high risk of wildlife species. Several species have already been wiped out by the deadly effects of climate change and in fact, some say that if this persists, then there will be a high change that by the year 2050, one-fourth of Earth’s species would be extinct. I personally think that anybody who would know about this would find it to be very alarming.

Frequency of Calamities

Another consequence of climate change would be floods, droughts, and fires being more frequent. Because of higher temperatures, droughts are more likely to happen, and areas affected by droughts have a high chance of flooding when it rains. Other than this, the hot weather can also trigger forest fires which can potentially destroy Mother Nature. Coming from a student’s point of view, I will honestly admit that I am not a 100% environmentalist, but I do care about our natural resources, to say the least. Also, the thought of these natural calamities becoming more often also bothers me, as several people will be affected when these happen.

Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation

Since climate change is a global phenomenon, it is important that we find ways in order to moderate its impacts and also learn how to adapt to it. One way we can do this is by switching to more energy-friendly technologies and using materials that are more energy sufficient.

To sum it all up, climate change is a serious issue that should not be dealt with lightly. We not only have to be aware of how climate change may affect our lives but also with its great impact. As an individual, we have to show concern to the world we live in, because once this gets destroyed, we will be the ones to pay the price for our consequential actions. I believe that in a situation like this, prevention is key. We may not be able to stop the effects of climate change permanently but we can still do something to lessen it. Do not wait for the time when you will regret not doing so.
